My art takes shape as welded metal sculptural representations of the world I live in, real and imagined.  The shadows I recognize and transform into sculpture are those I see in the material I choose to work -steel- in the form of plate, bar, tube, and angle, as well as ready-made found objects.

I paint from visual memories, recalling the emotional impact of a particular moment in time.  I work with encaustic (bee’s wax with colored pigments), oil, acrylic, oil pastels and mixed media on paper, canvas, archival panels and wood blocks.
The jewel-like transparent color and luminous quality of the wax both reveal and conceal as the painting is built up in layers.  The final effect is rich both in lush texture and deep optical space that is most dramatic when viewed in person.

Studio #2

Roland's Studio

Roland Coates, watercolors and colored pencils.

410 Ashby Road, New Ipswich.

Over the past couple of years I have moved away from using watercolors to focusing on colored pencils. I am a realist and am fascinated with what I can do with them. The colors blend beautifully and more realistically than watercolors. I experience the subject coming alive at some point during my composition, which is very exciting.
