About
BFA in Painting
Maryland Institute College of Art
I love to make things with my hands.I grew up in a creative household. My mother made puppets for shows and taught us all to do batik, macrame and all sorts of crafts and woodworking. I used to draw with very light pencils as a child and rapidograph pens that you had to load up with ink. My early work was delicate, detailed line art of people and places I invented. I went to art school at 17. I wanted to be an illustrator but I fell in with a group of painters. So I learned to consider the whole composition without getting bogged down with the details. I've worked with a welder, an organ builder, painted sets for plays, done carpentry work and designed gardens. For years I drew landscapes fast and loose with pastels. I also made hand built porcelain pieces for a while. I've done illustration work, logos and taught art to children. I love coming up with projects that children can do.
I think I consider myself mainly a painter. I currently work in watercolor. I still draw all the time to work out how I feel about life. Lately I find that I can really pull all the work together right down to the details without losing sight of the whole. This feels empowering and very satisfying.
I'm uplifted by nature and the beauty I see in the landscape around me: clouds, trees, shadows, shafts of sunlight.
